Sodalite got its name from the English chemist and mineralogist Thomas Thomson because of its high sodium content. Synonyms for sodalite are bluestone, alomite or glaucolite.
It is found in Namibia, Brazil and Canada. The best quality comes from Namibia. In Russia, a red sodalite was found for the first time.
Sodalite is colourless, bluish-grey, better qualities are dark blue to black-blue, red sodalite is very rare.
