Cordierite (Iolite)

Cordierite was named in 1813 after the French president Louis Antoine Cordier. Cordierite is very often called iolite, which was given to it because of its violet blue colour, Greek ion=violet, lithos=stone.

Cordierite is often found in Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar and Brazil. Depending on the angle of view, cordierite is violet blue, smoky yellow or yellow.
