Garnet

The word garnet means "the grainy one" (lat. granum=grain), which refers to the red colour of many garnets, reminiscent of the ripe blossoms of a pomegranate. Synonyms for garnet are carbuncle, star garnet or cube garnet. The garnet group consists of 16 independent minerals.
The most important garnets are: Almandine, Andradite, Grossular, Pyrope, Spessartine and Uwarowite.

Each of these garnets is found in different countries, so it is impossible to say where they generally come from.

The garnet group belongs to the mineral class of island silicates. The common molecular formula is: Me^2 + 3Me^3 + 2(SiO4)3.
