Jadeite

The name jade dates back to 1569 and means in Spanish "pietra de ijada" = loin stone, because it was known by the Indians from South America as a kidney remedy. Through the discovery of magnesium in the 19th century, it turned out that the term jade is actually divided into three minerals: Jadeite, Nephrite and Chloromelanite.

The only synonym for jadeite is the Chinese term yü.

Important jadeite deposits are in Burma, China, Russia and California/USA.

Jadeite is monoclinic and appears in green, white, yellow, brown, reddish or violet.
