Onyx stone
Onyx means "fingernail" (Greek onyx=nail). In former times, agates were probably called onyx because they resemble fingernails in colour and lustre. It was not until the 18th century that the name onyx was applied to the black chalcedony. Synonyms for onyx are onychel and pramnion.
Onyx is found in Brazil, India and Arabia. Natural onyx is very rare, often coloured.
Onyx is black, interspersed with white layers and bands.
