The name malachite comes from the Greek malache=malva, which is where the synonym "malvenstein" comes from, or it comes from the Greek malako=soft due to its low hardness, which is where the term "softstone" comes from.

Malachite is found in Zaire and Russia.

Malachite is monoclinic and is always green, light green or dark green.
